Question: I read your article about the chiropractic care for veterans through the VA but I do not know where to get started. How do I start the process and how does it work? – Jerry G., Chelyan, WV
Answer: Hi Jerry, and thank you for your service! After being involved in the Chiro4Vets Program at our office, I have become very familiar with the challenges of dealing with chronic conditions suffered by the Veterans after serving their time in the military. The constant physical wear and tear endured by our soldiers cause life-long disabilities that will have to managed after their time served has come to an end. Frequently our Veterans struggle with a multitude of health concerns upon returning from service, ranging from chronic pain related to physical injuries (musculoskeletal/orthopedic issues) to emotional and psychological issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Chiropractic is now a treatment option available to Veterans through the VA Community Care Program.
In response to the need within the Veteran community for accessible Chiropractic care, our office has created the Chiro4Vets program to help bridge the gap between the high demand for chiropractic care and the limited VA services available for those Vets in our community. We offer one-on-one care and work in conjunction with their medical doctors to provide each Vet the personalized chiropractic care they deserve.
As people become more aware of the benefits of Chiropractic care, it is our hope that those who have given so much to our country have easier access to Chiropractic services. In conjunction with the Veteran Affairs Community Care Program, the Chiro4Vets Program cuts through the referral red tape and helps Veterans navigate their way to the Chiropractic care they need. Our approach is not designed to replace current medical treatment but rather compliment it, helping to improve their quality of life faster by addressing the entire person and not simply the symptoms. We have had a huge response from our Veteran patients since beginning our Chiro4Care program but I do understand there are questions on how to get the ball rolling to access your Chiropractic benefits through the VA so here are some tips to get started.
Getting Started With VA Community Care
If you are interested in Chiropractic care through the Community Care Program, you (the Vet) must be active with a primary care doctor at your assigned VA facility
To facilitate the referral for care through Chiro4Vets in this office, we have a simple one-page form to give to your medical doctor requesting Chiropractic services with Dr. Misty Green, D.C. (available by request).
Once the request has been submitted, it can take up to 4 weeks for it to be processed and the initial appointment scheduled with this office. The VA Hospital will coordinate the scheduling of the first appointment but all future appointment will be scheduled directly with the treating facility.
Prior to your first Chiropractic visit in this office, your past (relevant) medical records will be forwarded for review by Dr. Misty, upon which an assessment of the Veterans health history will be made and a customized Chiropractic treatment plan will be created to that works in conjunction with you current healthcare providers.
